REPORTING AND ADDRESSING RACIST INCIDENTS
Introduction
In East Sussex the Reporting and Addressing Racist Incident Scheme has been operating since April 2002. This scheme is based at Sompriti, an independent Black and minority ethnic charity working across East Sussex. This partnership scheme collects reports on racist incidents as well as provides a confidential service to support victims of racist incidents and their families. Through this scheme Sompriti works in partnership with, and is funded by, four Crime Reduction Partnerships around the county, East Sussex County Council (ESCC) and Sussex Police.
How we can help you
This scheme has two important functions:
• Racist Incident Casework Service:
The Casework Service offers support to people who would like to take action to address the racism they have experienced. We talk through the experience and explore what outcomes or actions the client would like. We then work in partnership with the client and relevant agencies, e.g. Local authorities or Sussex Police towards progressing the case.
We are aware of the concerns people might have in reporting racism and that in the first instance a person experiencing racism may just want to talk through their situation in confidence. We very much welcome and encourage anybody to give us a call or drop us in a line in a letter or email.
All communications are treated in confidence and we only take steps once we have talked things through carefully with a client and agreed together the next steps. We also offer support in a range of languages (eg: Bengali, Cantonese, Mandarin, Portuguese, Spanish and Turkish) provided by bi-lingual community workers who can speak to the client over the phone or meet the client wherever it is most convenient for them.
• Reporting:
A racist incident can be reported by contacting Sompriti directly by phone, by letter, fax or email. To help with this reporting there is an agreed format which all partners to the casework service use. Copies of the guidelines and reporting form can be downloaded from the links below. Both forms are laid out in the same way, please use whichever one is most convenient.
See details below for the ways you can return the completed form...
Why report a racist incident?
Reporting racist incidents as well as enabling responsive action also helps provide a better picture of racist incidents which help to shape and inform policy and practice to reduce racism in the long-term.
'This is why every single report counts!'
